Traditions of india

March 13 - 22, 2020

On this adventure retreat, led by Gioconda Parker, Sarah Montross, and Amara Risa, you will experience the depth and traditions of holy cities of Haridwar and Rishikesh. After being nourished in the Himalayas, we will head to the Thar Desert of Rajasthan and it's sweeping landscapes.  You’ll have space for peace and contemplation with opportunities to practice yoga asana, with guided meditation and the healing practices of Yin Yoga and Yoga Nidra offered throughout the retreat as well.

We will begin in Delhi and then journey to Haridwar, which means “Gateway of God”. According to legend, it was here where Lord Shiva released the mighty river and Goddess Ganga (Ganges) from the locks of his hair.  Haridwar is where this river, after flowing for 157 mi from its source at the edge of the Gangotri Glacier, enters the plains from the mountains for the first time. We will then journey to Rishikesh.

Rishikesh, in the beautiful setting of the Himalayan foothills, is a pilgrimage town and the "Yoga Capital of the World".  Hindu sages and saints have visited Rishikesh since ancient times to meditate in search of higher knowledge. Here, we will visit temples and ashrams that line the river and participate in meditation and prayer ceremonies bathed in the rituals and knowledge of sages. We will take a sacred bath in the holiest river, the Ganges, with mantra chanting. Our time in Rishikesh will also include trekking in the mountains and white water rafting down the Ganges for you to experience the mightiness of the landscape here. You'll have plenty of time to contemplate all of your experiences here and even enjoy shopping in the local bazaar.

From Rishikesh, we head to the beautiful state of Rajasthan, home of royal history, sweeping hill forts, palaces, and princes. We'll stay overnight at a luxury desert camp and experience a once-in-a-lifetime sunset around a campfire with a traditional folk dance. You will learn about Indian desert culture through a camel safari amidst the beautiful landscape and wildlife of the Thar Desert. We'll head from there to our last stop, the Blue City of Jodhpur. We will visit the mighty Mehrangarh fort that towers over the skyline, a stunning architectural masterpiece. Below the fort, the Blue City is a tangle of winding, glittering, medieval streets lined with shops and bazaars waiting for you to explore.

Whether you’re visiting to experience the colorful traditions of India or seeking answers to life’s deepest questions, India has a way of awakening you to a deeper state of awareness. Join us for this journey in North India and you'll never be the same.
